The Carpentry Skills Development Program is an initiative designed to empower Liberian youth with marketable skills in carpentry, enhancing their employability and ability to contribute to their communities. This program aims to address youth unemployment by equipping participants with both practical and theoretical knowledge in carpentry, preparing them for a variety of opportunities in construction, furniture-making, and related industries.
Program Highlights
Partnerships with Vocational and Technical School
The program will collaborate with established vocational and technical schools across Liberia, leveraging their resources and expertise. These partnerships will ensure that participants receive high-quality training aligned with national and international industry standards.
Dual Certification System
Participants will earn two certifications upon successful completion of the program:
- A certificate from the partnered vocational/technical school** that validates their practical skills and academic achievements.
- A certificate from the Mishael Bia-Garyar Jewell Bates Vocational Training Program, signifying their holistic training and commitment to excellence.
Comprehensive Curriculum
The program will cover a wide range of carpentry skills, including:
- Woodworking fundamentals
- Furniture design and construction
- Use of tools and machinery
- Safety standards and best practices
- Business and entrepreneurial training to help graduates start their own carpentry businesses.
Monitoring and Evaluation
- Assessment Criteria: Assess participants through practical assignments, business proposal submissions, and a final project demonstrating their skills.
- Employment Tracking: Monitor graduates’ progress in the workforce, particularly their success in finding employment or establishing businesses.
Hands-On Training
Participants will engage in practical, project-based learning to develop real-world skills. They will work on community projects, such as building furniture for schools or homes, gaining experience while contributing to local development.
Job Placement and Entrepreneurship Support
Upon completion, participants will have access to job placement services, apprenticeship opportunities, and mentorship programs. Those interested in entrepreneurship will receive guidance on starting their own carpentry businesses, including business planning and access to microfinance resources.
